THE PROCESS
A new way of working on a project
So far, this internship has made me realize how different actual research is from a personal project. Most of the time, I would do a personal project to practice a concept I already know and try to find a project idea based on my skill level. However, with this project, we start with the end goal and then think of the way to reach it. For the past three days, I have been reading and studying the result of research by a team from Cornell University as part of the process of finding the best method to collect our data. This part is mainly my task, and I a
m supposed to compare different methods of collecting the data in order to find the most efficient one.
This new method of working is very new to me. For once, I had to forget about everything I already knew, learn how to learn from other people's research, and use as many of the resources available as possible. This process was very stressful for me on the first day because I have this tendency to want to know and understand everything that I set my eyes on. The research by the team from Cornell University was way too packed to understand all in three days and to make a report. So I decided to look at the problem differently and tried a new method on my second day. Instead of trying to understand everything, I tried to understand how everything works abstractly, and then I identified the part of their research that would be the most useful to us. I dived deeper into that specific part and tried to understand it at a lower level. I know that I will use part of their research and edit it in some way, so I need to understand how some of the code works. However, with this new method, instead of trying to understand everything, I managed to narrow it down to a fewer sections, which I can edit depending on our needs.
This method of tackling a project is a new skill that I have now acquired, and I plan to apply it to my future projects, whether they are personal, in a collaboration, or research like this one. I think it is valuable and allows me to take advantage of the available resources instead of reinventing the wheel.
